Reading a two-dice roll
Each die can show any whole number from 1 to 6. The tray shows both faces side by side and adds them together, so a 3 and a 4 give a total of 7.
Doubles are easy to spot because both faces match. Your history keeps each pair in order, which helps when a game treats the two dice separately rather than adding them.
Why 7 appears more often
Two fair six-sided dice have 36 equally likely ordered outcomes. Six give a total of 7; only one gives a total of 2. The table shows how many of the 36 outcomes produce each total.
| Total | Outcomes | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 1 of 36 | 2.8% |
| 3 | 2 of 36 | 5.6% |
| 4 | 3 of 36 | 8.3% |
| 5 | 4 of 36 | 11.1% |
| 6 | 5 of 36 | 13.9% |
| 7 | 6 of 36 | 16.7% |
| 8 | 5 of 36 | 13.9% |
| 9 | 4 of 36 | 11.1% |
| 10 | 3 of 36 | 8.3% |
| 11 | 2 of 36 | 5.6% |
| 12 | 1 of 36 | 2.8% |
Try a counting game
Predict the total before you roll, then count the dots to check. Keep each result separate when your game treats dice independently.
Need more than two dice or a different number of sides? The main virtual dice roller goes up to 20 dice. For a big shared display, use the classroom dice roller.
